Toronto: Canada is to hold a snap election on April 28. Prime Minister Mark Carney asked Governor General Mary Simon to prorogue the House of Commons on Sunday morning in Ottawa, setting the campaign for the nation's next government.
The election is to be conducted almost six months earlier than the initially proposed date of October 27. Following his meeting with the Governor General, Carney declared the date of election. "I'm seeking a clear positive mandate from my fellow Canadians," he statedThe threats by US President Donald Trump against Canada dominated his campaign-like address: "He wants to break us so America can own us, we will never allow that to occur." He insisted that he needed a new mandate to "stand up" to Trump.
Carney turned to populism as he vowed "big change" such as a middle-class tax reduction, while echoing his undoing of various policies laid out by his predecessor Justin Trudeau, such as the scrapping of a consumer carbon tax and a capital gains increase. Carney is to make his electoral debut in the seat in the House of Commons held by Indo-Canadian MP Chandra Arya whose candidacy for the 2025 election was withdrawn on Thursday. That Carney is to contest from the riding (a Canadian term for constituency) of Nepean in Ontario, a suburb of the national capital Ottawa, was informed by the governing Liberal Party on Saturday.
